The Role of Connections as Minimal Norms in Normative Systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
The paper aims at developing an algebraic representation of normative systems by sets of minimal norms, “connections”, within relational structures called condition implication structures. It is shown that, given some general presuppositions, a normative system is completely determined by its set of connections, and that comparisons between normative systems can be made by considering whether connections in one system are narrower or wider than in another. The general framework for the study is Boolean algebra and a relational structure called Boolean quasi-ordering.

Navigating Between Stealth Advocacy and Unconscious Dogmatism: The Challenge of Researching the Norms, Politics and Power of Global Health
Global health research is essentially a normative undertaking: we use it to propose policies that ought to be implemented. To arrive at a normative conclusion in a logical way requires at least one normative premise, one that cannot be derived from empirical evidence alone. But there is no widely accepted normative premise for global health, and the actors with the power to set policies may use...
متن کاملPrioritising, Ranking and Resource Implementation - A Normative Analysis
Background Priority setting in publicly financed healthcare systems should be guided by ethical norms and other considerations viewed as socially valuable, and we find several different approaches for how such norms and considerations guide priorities in healthcare decision-making. Common to many of these approaches is that interventions are ranked in relation to each other, following the appli...
متن کاملPlaying with norms: tractability of normative systems for homogeneous game structures
In this paper we study the connection between anonymous (normal form) games and normative systems for homogeneous concurrent game structures. We present a variant of the popular strategic logic atl that allows for reasoning about norm compliance and the strategic ability of coalitions of agents. We broaden the notion of a normative system compared to earlier work and introduce two categories: i...
متن کاملPolitics and Power in Global Health: The Constituting Role of Conflicts; Comment on “Navigating Between Stealth Advocacy and Unconscious Dogmatism: The Challenge of Researching the Norms, Politics and Power of Global Health”
In a recent article, Gorik Ooms has drawn attention to the normative underpinnings of the politics of global health. We claim that Ooms is indirectly submitting to a liberal conception of politics by framing the politics of global health as a question of individual morality. Drawing on the theoretical works of Chantal Mouffe, we introduce a conflictual concept of the political as an alternative...
متن کاملNormative Systems in Computer Science - Ten Guidelines for Normative Multiagent Systems
In this paper we introduce and discuss ten guidelines for the use of normative systems in computer science. We adopt a multiagent systems perspective, because norms are used to coordinate, organize, guide, regulate or control interaction among distributed autonomous systems. The first six guidelines are derived from the computer science literature. From the so-called ‘normchange’ definition of ...
